190CX OPERATION: MUSEUM

WIN a brand new 190CX tripod

take a photo of your old 190, win a new one!

closing date for entries - May 31st, 2008

The new 190CXPRO4

We developed the Manfrotto 190 tripod in the early 1980s and first exposed it to the world's photographers in 1984; we tinted it in 1996; retouched it in 2000; focused on it again in 2002; re-formatted it in 2004; color-corrected it in 2005 and completely re-developed it in 2006. Optimized in 2008 with the launch of the 190CX Carbon Fiber models, the 190 is still our most popular tripod.

And what better way to celebrate the launch of our latest and greatest model and its quarter-century of heritage than with a photographic museum dedicated to the "story so far" of the 190, with images of the heritage 190 tripods submitted by Manfrotto 190 users and friends?

We'd like you to send us your photographs of the most-aged, hardest-working, best-loved old 190 tripods out there and we'll be giving away a total of 11 brand new 190CX tripods as prizes for the best images we receive for the following categories:

Operation Museum CATEGORIES and AWARDS:

190 awards:

Art. 190
tripods in general

  • subject: any photo, any style, any setting, any age with any of the 190 series tripods prominently visible
  • prizes: 3 x 190CX tripod

Art. 190
tripods "in use"

  • subject: the 190 tripod shown in use with the equipment it supports and (where possible) with its user
  • prizes: 3 x 190CX tripod

Photokina awards:

the most worn (out) 190

  • subject: 190s that have been to hell and back, and show it: knocked, scraped, burnt, twisted, dented...
  • prize: 1 x 190CX tripod

the best kept 190

  • subject: used, but loved, the 20-year-old 190 that looks like it was made yesterday
  • prize: 1 x 190CX tripod

the oldest 190

  • subject:a photo of one of the first series of 190s that looks old enough to be part of the fossil record.
  • prize: 1 x 190CX tripod

190 extreme

  • subject: the most extreme documented use of a 190 - underwater, under a tonne of gear, tricked out...
  • prize: 1 x 190CX tripod
To win one of the Photokina Awards, you must also be able, if your photo is chosen, to lend us the physical tripod depicted in the photograph so we can exhibit it at Manfrotto's HQ in Italy and on the Manfrotto stand at the Photokina fair in Cologne, Germany which takes place between the 23rd and 28th September 2008. The tripod will remain your property, and after the loan will be returned to you (unless you don't want it back after using the 190CX we send you!).

flickr-only award

flickr's

most "interesting" 190

  • subject: the 190 photo which the magic donkey loves the best
  • prize: 1 x 190CX tripod
This flickr-only award is open solely to photographs of 190 tripods tagged in flickr with "190cxoperationmuseum", and will be judged on the flickr "interestingess" rating of competing photos at the closing date of May 31st, 2008. To find the winner, we'll (probably) use flickriver.com's "search by tags" feature, ordering the list of photographs by interestingness - the first photo wins, as long as it does actually show a 190 tripod.

F.A.Q.

HOW CAN I ENTER?

Your photographs of 190 tripods can be submitted to the competition through flickr.com or by email:
  1. To use flickr, tag your photo "190cxoperationmuseum" and submit it to the 190CX Operation Museum flickr group pool - and don't forget to add Manfrotto to your contact list so we can add you back and keep an eye on your photography! Go to flickr now.
  2. To use email, send a jpg or tiff file weighing no more than 4MB to the following address operationmuseum@manfrotto.com
If you send your image by email, we reserve the right to upload it to flickr under our own User ID for the purposes of making submitted images visible to the public. We will credit the image to its photographer and link to the photographer's website if he/she indicates. Images added to flickr by us will not be eligible for the flickr "interestingness" prize.
Photos submitted at the first stage can be low resolution copies (but should not be less than 800px longest side), but winning photographers must also be able to provide a high resolution original file or scan.

UNTIL WHEN IS THE COMPETITION OPEN?

The deadline for receiving photographs to Operation Museum via email or flickr is May 31st, 2008.

WHICH 190 MODELS CAN BE PHOTOGRAPHED?

For the purposes of this competition, only photographs of the older, pre-2006 models of 190 tripods will be considered as valid entries to the prize competition in our Museum. You can recognise the newer, ineligible tripods by the new Manfrotto logo and/or the design of the tripod shoulder as shown:

ineligible tripods - shoulder design

190X (190XPROB, 190XB, etc) and 190PROBWORLDCUP owners, you should be relieved... your tripods are too young to go into a Museum!
a full list of eligible model numbers, both Manfrotto and Bogen equivalents, is shown here:
