Keeping Productions Moving with Manfrotto XCHANGE

Alan Stockdale of York Road Studio shares how the Manfrotto XCHANGE quick-release system speeds up head, slider and grip changes on real shoots.

Keeping Productions Moving with Manfrotto XCHANGE

One of the biggest challenges on a busy production isn't always the shoot itself. Sometimes, it's everything that happens between the shots.

Changing heads. Moving from a tripod to a slider. Reconfiguring a rig. Shifting monitors or other equipment around the studio.

Individually, these jobs only take a few minutes. But across a full production, those minutes add up, particularly when you're working with a small crew or shooting solo.

At York Road Studio, we're constantly changing setups, so having a quick and reliable way of moving equipment around is essential.

That's where Manfrotto XCHANGE comes in: a quicker way to change your setup.

Manfrotto XCHANGE: A simpler way to swap gear

Manfrotto XCHANGE is a quick-release system designed to let you swap heads, sliders and other accessories in seconds, with support for payloads up to 20kg.

The beauty of it is its simplicity.

With the Manfrotto ONE Hybrid , the XCHANGE base is already built into the tripod, so there's nothing extra to install. The XCHANGE-ready 500X attaches directly, while my other traditional heads can be fitted with an XCHANGE plate .

That means I can move from a video head to a photo head, a larger video head, or a slider without rebuilding the entire setup.

And the slider swap is one of my favourite features. With an XCHANGE plate screwed onto the bottom of the slider and an XCHANGE base mounted on top, I can attach the slider directly to the ONE Hybrid tripod , then put the head back on top. In just a few seconds, I’ve completely changed the setup and I’m ready to shoot again.

It’s a small change to the workflow, but when you’re doing it repeatedly throughout a production, the time saved becomes significant. More importantly, you’re less likely to avoid a particular shot because changing the setup feels like too much work. When reconfiguring your rig only takes seconds, it’s easier to try different angles, setups and ideas without losing time on set.

What about the tripods I already own?

You don't have to start with an XCHANGE-ready tripod.

The XCHANGE kit gives you a base and a plate, so any compatible tripod with a 3/8-inch thread can become part of the system.

So whether it's a ONE Photo, a Manfrotto 190, or another tripod you already own, you can add XCHANGE without replacing your existing equipment.

You can also buy plates and bases individually, which means I can build the system around the kit I already own.

Manfrotto XCHANGE goes beyond tripods

This is where I think XCHANGE gets particularly interesting for a working studio.

At York Road Studio, we're constantly moving equipment: monitors onto carts, lights between stands and ceiling track, boom arms for audio, and various pieces of grip.

Manfrotto XCHANGE gives you another way to make those changes quickly.

It's not about completely changing the way you work. It's about removing some of the small frustrations that slow a production down.

Why faster setup changes matter on set

For me, it comes down to time.

The less time I spend changing equipment, the more time I have to concentrate on the actual shoot. And when you're running multiple setups in a day, those small savings really add up.

That's what I like about XCHANGE . It's a relatively small addition to your kit, but it gives you far more flexibility in how you build and run a production.

At York Road Studio, where no two shoots are quite the same, that flexibility is pretty valuable.

Spend less time changing the kit. Spend more time shooting.
