What is creativity for Ania Elias?

Creativity for me is many things. Perhaps easiest will be to start with what creativity is not. Creativity is not perfectionism – if you can’t consider the possibility of making a mistake, I don’t believe you can take creative risk. You have to give yourself permission (and expect!) to make mistakes. Creativity can be frightening at times. For example, you may have doubts that you will succeed, or fear the unknown. Once I realized that you can’t avoid uncertainty in your creative journey, that it needs to be embraced, I found the process much more relaxing.

I’d like to start by saying that although I always try to think ‘outside the box’, actually looking at what’s inside the box can often take you by surprise! One of my favourite props to use in food photography is either an old French deep cast iron casserole dish or a wooden box. You can achieve some truly beautiful light when you create your set up inside a deeper container or a wooden box.

Tricks of the trade

I believe that there are three components to creating a beautiful and eye-catching photo. These are: light, a pleasing composition and making the food look delicious and real. The food needs to be the star of the show, and we food photographers and stylists go to great lengths and adopt various tricks to get the images looking irresistible. One secret weapon that I recommend everyone has in their styling kit is Maggi Liquid Seasoning.

Compose Your Vision - Miniature

I always ask myself a lot of questions when starting a new project. Is this concept strong? What feeling will this evoke? What do I need to create depth in the image, is it through colour contrast or physical objects? How will the light reflect on the surface?

Compose Your Vision - Levitation Photography

Real-Levitation Photography is a testament to finding beauty in the surrealism of moving subjects in the air. It is a celebration of the transient moments happening all around us every day that we barely seem to notice. For this project, I am bringing it back to where real levitation got its start: Footwear. I will be highlighting some of the world’s most coveted sneakers, alongside NBA style legend, Lance Fresh.

Compose Your Vision - Hydration | Moisture

This project was all about creating a visual representation of hydration. The idea stems from visualising how water falls within a scene. Sensorial exploration of what quenching your thirst could look like. The tubes correlating to human anatomy, how water hydrates and moves, constitutes the body.

What is creativity for David Lineton?

Creativity is the ability to express a vision in a stylistic, conceptual and enticing way. Style being a method in which my perspective is explored. Conceptualisation the dance between source and the tools and techniques I use. Finally, to entice refers to my inherent want to deliver beautiful images. A way to push the ordinary into a commercial realm in which people identify with a message and engage in the subject photographed. Great creativity is not necessarily obvious, it’s the perfect harmony between theory and practice.

Several reasons really but when I was starting out as a photographer I found myself being particularly drawn to the idea of "curating an approach". By this, I mean taking into consideration the composition of various elements within one image. Perfecting each element's potential to explore and expand the overall concept. Often, the components I wanted to photograph were inanimate. If they were animate subjects, I'd always end up considering their stillness and structural integrity.
