Capturing Breakfast Bliss: A Step-by-Step Guide to Stop Motion Photography

Capturing Breakfast Bliss: A Step-by-Step Guide to Stop Motion Photography

Hi, my name is Roberto Luzzitelli and in 1985 I founded the Luzzitelli Danieli Production. I began my journey in the world of photography as an advertising photographer. In a short time, my portfolio had a great variety of images from still-life to food and beverage, from fashion to portrait. The transition from traditional photography to digital has given the studio a new creative tool: postproduction.

Since 1990 Luzzitelli Danieli & Associati has had an in-house postproduction department in the studio in which great professionals work using state-of-the-art software always under the careful supervision of the photographers.

Despite the great experience gained in the field of advertising photography, study and experimentation remain the basis of my creative activity and day after day I continue to search for a new way to communicate through my images. The new frontier is definitely CGI/3D and AI and Video productions, on which I have invested great energy and have as many expectations as possible. The inclusion of my son Francesco Luzzitelli in the team has made this possible and on the agenda. In recent years we also invested in a great group of professionals consisting of photographers, assistant photographers, post producers, CGI/artists, social developers, video makers and AI Prompters.

I have been working with Manfrotto since 1985, an ideal partner always up to the task and always by my side with products known for their durability, reliability, and innovative design features.

What is Stop Motion

Stop motion is a filmmaking technique where objects are physically manipulated in small increments between individually photographed frames, creating the illusion of movement when the frames are played back in sequence. This method is used to animate inanimate objects, such as clay figures, puppets, or even everyday objects.

Its physiological basis is simple: it works on the principle of persistence of vision, where the human eye retains an image for a fraction of a second after it disappears. By capturing a sequence of slightly different images and playing them back quickly, the brain perceives continuous motion.

The process involves capturing a series of still images, each representing a single frame of animation. Between each frame, the position of the objects or characters is slightly adjusted, simulating movement. When these frames are played in rapid succession, the slight changes in position give the impression of continuous motion.

Stop motion animation can be created using various techniques, including claymation, (using clay figures), puppet animation (using articulated puppets), object animation (using everyday objects) and cut-out animation (using flat materials, such as paper or cardboard). Additionally, stop motion can be combined with other animation techniques or live-action footage to create unique visual effects. Stop motion animation has been used in a wide range of productions, including feature films, short films, television shows, commercials, and music videos. It offers filmmakers a creative and flexible way to bring imaginative worlds and characters to life, often with a distinctive handmade aesthetic.

Why Stop Motion is important

Stop motion has gained popularity in social media over the years, particularly due to its ability to captivate audiences with visually engaging content. While it may not be as ubiquitous as other forms of content such as photos or traditional videos, stop motion has carved out a niche for itself and continues to be embraced by both brands and content creators across various social media platforms.

Several factors contribute to its effectiveness: Increased Engagement, Creativity and Originality, Memorability, Demonstration of Products or Processes, Increased Shareability, Storytelling Potential, Versatility, and most important of all It Stands Out in a Crowded Feed.

Our Project

The Stop Motion we created aims at showing the preparation of pancakes with their decorations. The scene opens with the ingredients jumping into a bowl and mixing to the rhythm of the music. When the mix is ready, a pan appears instead of the bowl in which the pancake is cooked first on one side and then on the other. Once cooking is complete, we proceed with the creative plating with fruit, creams and toppings, until the final vision of a tasty breakfast, ready for the family.

Our plan was to recreate the preparation of a pancake breakfast, including the preparation of the mixture. We wanted to recreate a home kitchen effect, with a wooden countertop and everything needed to make a hearty breakfast, in addition to the ingredients themselves for preparing the pancakes. The movement of the elements was not very complex, as we find ourselves in a situation where the preparation all occurs in the same place, with a mutual approach of the elements and some element substitution. The lighting has been designed to recreate a warm and welcoming environment, just like a sweet family breakfast. The most difficult part was certainly making the dipping of the ingredients into the container in a harmonious, sinuous, and not boring way. In postproduction we opted for 30 fps, in order to have enough fluid movement without impacting the duration of the video.

The importance of the Tripod

Needless to say, to achieve these final results, every frame must be shot on a tripod. Because it gives consistency and steadiness to the scenes. This way, every frame can be combined together for a realistic motion. That’s why I use Manfrotto for my stop motions, Manfrotto offers a wide range of camera support equipment designed to help me to stabilize my cameras and achieve precise positioning for their shots.

Specifically, in this case, I used a 055 studio tripod, with ballhead XPRO and with the addition of the move new quick connection, I have been able to work lay flat with the arm that I love, the 131 D.

This set up is, for sure, my favorite. The new Move allows me to easily and in no time pass from a regular tripod-head-camera configuration, to a lay flat one. A real time saver, which has also the positive turn that I get to use the sturdy 131D arm, much flexible than the usual horizontal central column of the tripod, which then still I can use to better adjust my camera height (which I couldn’t do, if it were horizontal). The tripod is carbon fiber, which because of its lightness can be effortlessly moved around the studio. Yet I can rely on his precision and sturdiness. The Xpro ballhead allows me freedom of movement still keeping rock steady my camera. Again, modularity, and the concept of a system and not just a line of products makes Manfrotto, for me a winner.

Modularity a winning concept

The concept of modularity in the Manfrotto system refers to the ability of their products to be combined and adapted in various configurations to meet all my specific needs.

Thanks to the modularity of the Manfrotto system, I can create custom configurations to meet my shooting needs flexibly and efficiently.

Manfrotto offers a wide range of accessories designed to integrate seamlessly with their tripods and heads. This includes adapters for accessories such as lights, microphones and monitors, as well as flexible arms, smartphone mounts and other useful tools to expand the capabilities of the camera support system.

This modular approach allows me to quickly adapt my equipment to various shooting situations encountered in the field, while ensuring reliable, high-quality performance.
