How to shoot epic food commercials

As foodies and content creators, we are always on the lookout for new restaurants and delicious recipes. Most of the time, we base our decisions on what we see on social media, just like everyone else. A recommendation from a friend is always good to have, but when you see that epic food shot… that’s when you know that you really have to go and try it for yourself. We raise our expectations based on a delicious image or video and sometimes, many times, we don’t get what we expected. This is the art of commercial food photography and filmmaking.

What is creativity for Ania Elias?

Creativity for me is many things. Perhaps easiest will be to start with what creativity is not. Creativity is not perfectionism – if you can’t consider the possibility of making a mistake, I don’t believe you can take creative risk. You have to give yourself permission (and expect!) to make mistakes. Creativity can be frightening at times. For example, you may have doubts that you will succeed, or fear the unknown. Once I realized that you can’t avoid uncertainty in your creative journey, that it needs to be embraced, I found the process much more relaxing.

Behind the scenes with Ania Elias

I’d like to start by saying that although I always try to think ‘outside the box’, actually looking at what’s inside the box can often take you by surprise! One of my favourite props to use in food photography is either an old French deep cast iron casserole dish or a wooden box. You can achieve some truly beautiful light when you create your set up inside a deeper container or a wooden box.
